Mathematical Analysis of a Size Structured Tree-Grass Competition Model for Savanna Ecosystems

چکیده
Several continuous-time tree-grass competition models have been developed to study conditions of long-lasting coexistence of trees and grass in savanna ecosystems according to environmental parameters such as climate or fire regime. In those models, fire intensity is a fixed parameter while the relationship between woody plant size and fire-sensitivity is not systematically considered. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model for the tree-grass interaction that takes into account both fire intensity and size-dependent sensitivity. The fire intensity is modeled by an increasing function of grass biomass and fire return time is a function of climate. We carry out a qualitative analysis that highlights ecological thresholds that summarize the dynamics of the system. Finally, we develop a non-standard numerical scheme and present some simulations to illustrate our analytical results. Impulsive Modelling for Tree-grass Interactions in Fire-prone Savanna
The study of tree-grass interactions in savanna (fires prone or not) remains an important issue for research. In African savanna, it is well known that fire is a major disturbance that shapes tree-grass ratio along a rainfall gradient. Several mathematical models have been developed that addressed fire prone savanna dynamics. Such models rely mostly on continuous-time modelling of tree-grass co...

It is usually admitted that fires play an important role in tree-grass interactions in savanna ecosystems. In this talk, we present a model of tree-grass dynamics using impulsive differential equations, considering fires as discrete events [1]. This framework allows us to carry out a comprehensive qualitative mathematical analysis that revealed more possible outcomes than the analogous continuo...
متن کاملFacilitation or Competition? Tree Effects on Grass Biomass across a Precipitation Gradient
Savanna ecosystems are dominated by two distinct plant life forms, grasses and trees, but the interactions between them are poorly understood. Here, we quantified the effects of isolated savanna trees on grass biomass as a function of distance from the base of the tree and tree height, across a precipitation gradient in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Our results suggest that mean annua...

[1] Water is a key resource in determining the composition and structure of savanna ecosystems. In this study we present a simple cellular automata model in which death and reproduction chances of trees and grasses are based on the dynamical description of plant water stress by a probabilistic ecohydrological point model, using the parameterization for a Texas savanna. The results show that the...

The spatially explicit and mechanistic model TREEGRASS was used to test the effects of tree density, tree spatial distribution, and tree size distribution on radiation absorption, net primary production (NPP), and, water fluxes for a West African savanna . The model has previously been shown to adequately predict radiation absorption, production, and soil water balance in humid savannas . Using...
